Vietnam’s top tennis star Ly Hoang Nam proved his class as he won both the single’s and double’s titles at the 2021 National Men’ & Women’s Tennis Championship (VTF Masters 500-1), which wrapped up in Tay Ninh City on January 31.
Nam beat his teammate from Hai Dang club – Trinh Linh Giang in the men’s single final yesterday, having also been crowned champion in the men's doubles a day before.
Giang rocked Vietnamese tennis last year as he defeated Nam to win the VTF Masters 500-2 Lach Tray Cup 2020 in November 2020, forcing an end to the latter’s 8-year consecutive winning streak at national tennis tournaments.
However, in the final yesterday, Giang could not repeat his feat over his close friend who ranks no. 712 in the world.
Nam – the no. 1 seed – quickly overwhelmed his opponent, turning the game in one way, and won easily as Giang – the no. 2 seed – became exhausted.
The first set was somewhat tedious as Nam was too strong against his opponent with a 6-0 victory. Into set 2, the 23-year-old player continued to display his outstanding performance. Giang's efforts in this set were only game wins, before letting Nam win a break in the 8th game and set a 6-3 victory, thereby snatching the championship title.
"Today I started the game better while Giang was not really focused at the beginning of the game. Unlike the tournament in Hai Phong last year, Giang couldn’t promote his strengths today,” Nam shared about his friend’s performance after the game.
A day earlier, the 1997-born also beat Giang in the double event, as the former and his teammate Van Phuong trounced no. 2 seed pair Quoc Khanh/Linh Giang 6-2, 6-3 in the final.
Also on Sunday (Jan 31), Dao Minh Trang beat no. 1 seed Tran Thuy Thanh Truc 6-3, 6-4 to be crowned with the women's singles championship title.
In the women's doubles, no. 1 seed couple Nguyen Thi Be Xuyen/Si Boi Ngoc successfully defended their championship title after defeating pair Le Thao Han/Phan Nhu Quynh 6-3, 6-0.
